Another New Compliance Government Rule for Your Company

The National Labor Relations Board  has issued a “Required” poster that is says must be posted no later than April 30, 2012, along with all the other employment law posters you are required to display by the federal government and the State of California.

Documents Employers Need – #1- Employment Applications

There are a set of documents which can make a California employer’s life easier, safer and protect his/her bottom line.  The vital ones include:

  • Employment Applications
  • New Hire Check List
  • Written Safety Plan (exit and fire plans also)
  • Employee Handbook
  • Personnel file and time records
  • Exit/Termination Checklist

For example, the national and California laws ask employers about discrimination in hiring; so, it is important to know who has applied for a job with your company, and to be able to show you did not ask improper, discriminatory questions in the hiring process.

Beware: Small Employers Are Frequent Targets of California Discrimination Claims

Many small employers focus so much on their operations that they may neglect compliance with employment laws, thinking that “nothing bad will ever happen to me”.

The latest report from California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing regarding employment discrimination claims filed in 2008-2009 may give them cause for concern.

The most frequent sized employers receiving complaints were those with from 16-50 employees, and employers with from six to 15 employees received almost as many discrimination complaints as employers with 50 or more employees.

Measure Twice, Cut Once

One of my father’s best friends was a master carpenter, who often said, “measure twice, cut once.”  He produced beautiful cabinets and other work, used resources efficiently and had loyal clients.

At the start of a new year, employers would benefit from following this same advice as they post the new 2011 employment posters at their work sites.

Measure whether you are following the many Federal and California employment laws which apply to your business.

Are Your 2011 Employment Law Posters and Pamphlets Ready?
